概要　Outline

東日本大震災から10年目にあたる2021年の「精神の〈北〉へ vol.11–vol.14」は、日本とスコットランドの交流企画です。当プロジェクトvol.1の参加者スー・グリアソンからの提案を受け、スコットランドでの開催を計画しましたが、世界は瞬く間にコロナ・パンデミックとなり、渡航が不可能に。スーと私は、両国の参加者が自国にいながら繋がり合う交流の方法を工夫しました。
その方法は、日本とスコットランドからの8名が、両国から1人ずつの４組のペアを組んで対話を重ね、作品を双方から送り合い、両方の会場にコラボレーション作品を展示するというものです。
日本：Spirit of North （丸山芳子企画)、スコットランド：Confluence of North（スー・グリアソン & ジリアン・マクファーランド企画）という２つのプロジェクトの共同企画として、両国の４地点で4回の開催を実現しました。
私たちは、コロナ禍による「会えない国際交流」というハードルを、ユーラシア大陸の東と西から向き合って乗り越え、協働して表現する可能性を切り拓いたのです。

A decade after the Great East Japan Earthquake, volumes 11–14 of Spirit of North in 2021 connected Japan and Scotland through an exchange of ideas and artistic visions. Initially, Su Grierson, a participant in the first Spirit of North project in 2013, proposed hosting the events in Scotland. But as the pandemic rapidly spread, international travel soon became impossible. Determined to continue, Su and I, Maruyama Yoshiko developed a way for eight participants from both countries to collaborate without ever leaving their home countries. We paired four participants from each country, who engaged in ongoing dialogue and artistic exchange.
The results were then exhibited simultaneously at venues in both countries. This collaboration was brought to fruition through two parallel projects: Spirit of North, curated by myself in Japan, and Confluence of North, curated by Su Grierson and Gillian McFarland in Scotland. Together, we successfully held four exhibitions across four locations in both nations. Through this initiative, we overcame the challenges of remote international exchange imposed by the pandemic, creating a platform for collaborative artistic expression from the eastern and western fringes of Eurasia.

「北と惑星思考」結城正美（青山学院大学文学部英米文学科教授：環境文学・アメリカ文学）
自然や環境は人間の歴史のなかで語られてきたけれども、惑星という視座は、近年になって出現したものである。人間の時間尺度を優に超えた惑星、そこに私たちは住んでいる。そのことについて文学作品を手がかりに考える。
