昨年の秋、丸山はフィンランドでの展覧会をスタートさせた後に英国北方のスコットランドに飛んで、Su Griersonさんとの再会のひとときを過ごしました。スーさんは「精神の〈北〉へ」の１回目の参加作家で、2013年の冬、福島県会津地方に招き、共に滞在活動と展覧会をしています。今回、彼女から、東日本大震災から10年目の2021年に、スコットランドでの『精神の〈北〉へ』開催を提案されました。

このような提案は、とてもうれしいことです。なぜなら、企画者の私と同様の強い意欲を持った人と取り組むと、推進力がはるかに大きくなります。これは、フィンランドでの開催で確信しました。交流国双方で準備すると、意欲も、資金獲得も、広報力も倍、片方でするよりもずっと可能性が広がります。今年に入って、私とスーに、スコットランドのアーティスト、ジリアンさんが加わり、私たち三人は運営チームとして2021年のスコットランド開催にむけて準備をスタートしました。少人数のチームワークは強く、だれもが責任感を持って、前へ前へと押していきます。

ところが今年に入ると、新型コロナウィルスが世界中に蔓延し、計画は大きく変更を強いられました。予定していた会場もレジデンスもみんな閉鎖し、日本から英国への渡航自体が、かなり難しくなりました。それなら、会うことのできないこの状況の意味を熟慮し、互いの理解を深める新しい方法を見出すことにチャレンジしよう。今後、このコロナ禍がどう推移するか予測がつかないため、そのような条件にフレキシブルに対応できる感性を見せるアーティストにコンタクトし、日本側作家４名、スコットランド側の作家も４名が決まりました。

開催は両国双方がスペースを設定し、両方の展覧会に８人全員の交流が反映され、互いにリンクした開催にしたいと思います。日本側も会場が必要となり、東京のある企画公募への応募と、久しぶりの会津地方での開催をめざして準備中です。

Last fall, I visited Su Grierson in Scotland, north of England. Su is the first participating artist of “Spirit of North” held in the winter of 2013.
She proposed me to hold “Spirit of North”  in Scotland in 2021, the 10th year since the Great East Japan Earthquake.
With the addition of Scottish artist Gillian Adair McFarland to me and Su, the three of us have begun preparations for the 2021 exhibition in Scotland as the organizer team.

However, earlier this year, the new coronavirus spread around the world, forcing a major change in our plans. All the planned venues and residences were closed. Traveling from Japan to the UK has become difficult.
So we decided to consider about this unusual exchange that we cannot meet each other and find new ways to deepen mutual understanding.
We will prepare venues in both countries, and both exhibitions will reflect the exchanges of eight artists, and the venues will be connected to each other remotely.
